1st time playing in the snow

We went to the snow last weekend, and the girls had a good time. Skyler stayed strapped to me while Valkyrie went sledding with her dad. Valkyrie liked the snow but wasn't too into sledding. Valkyrie even had adorable pink boots to wear. Huey joined us and loved eating the snow, Jeff even tried having Huey pull him on the sled....he didn't get far, but it was still fun to watch. We didn't stay long, but with the new snow we are getting this week maybe we'll head back up. It was a nice way to end a perfect Christmas weekend.

Christmas Card

I don't want you to feel as though I have forgotten you and not sent you a Christmas card this year, but in the spirit of trying to stay sane, I just don't have the time or energy (I know sounds like a lame excuse) to send out cards this year. So I'm sending you this Christmas Blog. I know it is totally un-personal, so sorry. Plus I see no point in sending the beloved Christmas Letter as this blog is like my year long letter.
I want you to know I'm thinking of you and wishing you the best holiday season.

Merry Christmas & A Happy and Healthy New Year!
We love you all!

Skyler is 5 months...and a few days

Skyler is doing great. She is such an easy going child. She is growing beautifully and other than a little congestion she is getting over she is very healthy. She can sometimes be a little too easy going and you forget about her. I’ll set her down on her belly for tummy time and go work on something or wrangle Valkyrie and a bit of time will pass and she is still there, content and smiling. (I don’t just leave her unattended; I don’t want you to get the idea that I’m a neglect mother). She is trying to sit up on her own and in a few more weeks I think she’ll have it down. She is relative quiet but sometimes will gabber (mostly after she hears Valkyrie talking a lot) She is adjusting to daycare life fairly well. I stop by at lunch to feed her and it always brightens my day.

Her upper body is getting very strong; she will push herself up and roll over while on her belly. She hasn’t gotten any teeth yet, which is fine with me. I know I have said this before but few things bother Skyler. Even when Valkyrie will sit on her, or get right in her face and say “Hi Skyla”, Skyler will just blink and look at her like...”yes this is my older sister” It is adorable that each morning when it is time to wake up Skyler I’ll go into out room and Valkyrie will follow me and say her name as she runs down the hall, then when she sees Skyler open her eyes she will say “Skyla, awake”. Skyler loves the Christmas lights and we will walk into the girl’s room at night and just let her gaze at the lights. Something about their room is so peaceful; it is our favorite room in the house. It is hard to explain it but then energy in that room is so wonderful; whenever I feel a little off I just step into that room alone and feel good again. The other weekend we went to the Christmas Lights Parade downtown and both girls had a good time, it was chilly, but we bundled them up and got a coffee and stood and watched the parade.

It will be her first Christmas in a few weeks and I got her a beautiful piece of art work of a mommy and baby. (what else do you get a 5 months old).

The other night I held her in my arms as she slept and thought to my self how blessed I am to have her, I know it may sound funny but I feel she understands me, when things are crazy I can look into her eyes and she speaks to my soul and says “It’s okay Mommy, I’m here now.” I love you Skyler.

Movie recomendation!

Watched a great movie a few weeks ago and I think everyone needs to see it. It was called Food Inc. and deals with lifting the veil of where your food comes from. Granted there are some parts that are hard to watch and I had to turn away and to say the least it really has me re-thinking eating meat (of any kind).
Jeff and I are really health, earth and animal conscience people to start with but this movie drilled home WHY it is so important to demand good food. From Organic, to local, to non-processed, to free range animals and to really read the labels and know where your food is coming from.
I really feel everyone needs to see this movie and to demand good food and demand the processes and laws to keep us safe! The only way the “system” is going to change is if we demand it does by what we choose to buy.
So do yourself a favor and see this movie and hey if you want, let me know what you think of it!

Beauty is in your own eye

Mothers be good to your daughters, and most important yourselves. Our daughters are watching us, learning from us. So many women out there have body image problems, which stem from a young age. It is heart breaking to hear a child call herself, ugly, no child should ever say those words about her self. We adults have a responsibility to our children to set examples, and if our children hear us put our selves down and call our self’s fat, ugly, un worthy, and countless other insults…..what does that teach them.

So I ask you mothers out there to be kind to yourself, love the body you were given for ALL that it is, help young women love who they are.

What is it with America’s sick obsession with un-realistic beauty? American women spend thousands of dollars on beauty products to firm, tone, revitalize, smooth, paint and cover, which by the way are all for the most part extremely toxic to their body. Think about the chemicals you are putting on your body and there for into your body. I ask you, do you really know what it in your lipstick? Here is 2 great websites:

http://www.safecosmetics.org/

http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php (this one lets you look up to toxic levels in everything from shampoo to nail polish)

I can only hope that I am so aware that I am able to teach my girls to love themselves for all that they have and were given. They are beautiful to me! And I am beautiful to me!!

Valkyrie is 2 years old!

Today is Valkyrie’s 2nd birthday and in a few hours we are on our way to meet the Knapps at the airport and then go swimming at a hot spring resort with the girls. I have her cake in the car and tons of snacks. So I am assuming you all saw the blog about stitches, yeah that was fun, not really. Valkyrie is doing fine and recovering. They say it will scar but you know she will look tough. No boy is going to mess with her on the playground with that bride of Frankenstein scar.

I have to admit I really enjoy writing about Valkyrie as she get older every moment she is doing something new and as she grows there is just so much more to write about.

Everyday her vocabulary is growing; it is so fun to teach her new words like: Recycle, Obama, Coldplay. Sometime when we teach her new words it is like the “Friends” episode when Febie tries to teach Joey French, and it is so funny. What comes out of her mouth sounds nothing like what we said and we all have a good laugh. She does know the ABC song and is very good with her letters. We can point to a letter and within a few tries she will get it right.

She loves to listen to “Bret and Jemaine” in the car, sometimes we have to beg her to listen to something else. While other kids at her age know and are singing songs like "Skidda rink" she is singing the lyrics of “Flight of the Conchords”......have I been a bad influence on her?

She knows he numbers and the concept of counting, although there seems to be “two eight” of everything.

“How many horses do you see Valkyrie?”

“Two eight.”

She understands concepts of things like forward and backward. Doesn’t sound like much but for a toddler learning things like that is a big deal. Before I had kids I used to wonder, how they learn things and the truth is they just pick it up. They hear you say it or someone else and it just clicks. Oh how awesome it would be for us adults to pick up on things that fast, we are stubborn and proud beings.

Valkyrie is very aware of her surroundings and others energy.

I can take her to a park one time and she has such a high situational awareness that weeks will pass and we will drive past a road that leads to that park and she will say “park”. We joke that she has like 20/10 vision because she will see things way before we do.

She has recently switched daycares and she seems to be doing fine, the new kids keep her entertained. This was Jeff’s last week off. Next week the Grandparents are up and going to watch the girls for the week but they will both go into daycare full time on November 30th. The new daycare is very close, so close I can ride my bike there with the girls in the summer.

We have just recently been trying the potty training thing. The great thing about cloth diapers is she knows right away when she is wet. She almost always tells me “wet mama” So I’ll ask her if she wants a change and she agrees. So to me that is the first step, recognizing that she is wet. She occasionally will sit on her potty and go pee, but I’m not pushing it. When she sees me change Skyler she almost always wants a change herself as well. A few nights ago she was able to pull her pants down along with her cloth diaper and go running down the hall yelling “naked baby!” It was so funny, we left her that way for awhile, but then got her in the bath ASAP because she is kind of like a puppy and will just pee anywhere.

When she sees me nurse Skyler or sees me “get into position” she will say “mama nurse nurse, Skyler nurse.” The other night she crawled into my lap and said “nurse mama.” (Now she has been weaned, by her own doing for almost a year so I was curious to see what she would do. Would she go right back into nursing, I have heard of toddlers that will un-wean when a sibling is born.) So I got her into position and Jeff just smiled at me like he knew what was going to happen and out came those pearly white teeth and she bit down, she laughed and ran away. Okay no more of that! I’m sorry was that too personal? ;)

She is trying to teach Skyler new things like the paddy cake song and she is always sharing her toys with Skyler. When Skyler will get upset she will go up to her and shhh her and try to calm her and hand her the toy she was playing with herself, as if to say “here you can play with this if you like.” She is a great big sister and I can’t express how it makes me feel to see my girls show love towards each other.

Well I better get going; I’ll make sure to post some birthday photos soon. Thanks for reading this and showing an interest in a bragging mother’s blog.

Stitches

It is kind of a big milestone, the way Jeff explained it to me: Like the first time you drop your motorcycle, you know you will the question is when. Well your first trip to the ER with your child is like that, you know someday you will be there, the answer to the question is then a matter a time. Well our time was last night, with Valkyrie. After dinner we cleaned up trying to think of something fun to do on a dark Saturday night, should we get ice cream, go for a walk, play a game, neither of us dreamed "How about a trip to the Hospital".
Valkyrie was running around in the romper room and tripped over her own feet as she normally does and landed right on the rock fireplace. (I'm sorry I still stand by my comment that there is no way to 100% baby proof your home, you can try but they will find the one thing and end up hurting themselfs on it.) Sure she cried at first but her dad and I kept our cool, we quickly loaded the girls in the car and by the time she was in her carseat she was demanding her music. She was such a trooper. As we checked in she kept telling the staff and nurses "Bonk", Jeff was doing everything her could to hold back the tears. We finally saw the DR. and he said "Oh we are having a special tonight on children's head lacerations, she will be the 3 tonight." Sounds like other parents had a hard time thinking of something to do like us. She was so aware of what was going on. We ended up decidition to have her milially sedated so the doctor could get a nice tight stich with out her having a fit. That was the hardest thing to watch, my active beautiful toddler stare off into space and look like a vegetable. Watching them repair her was nothing compared to seeing my daughter minds thousands of miles away. The altered state was going to be only an hour they said but about 40 min into it, she starting singing her ABC's and baba black sheep. The doctor hurried with his last stitch and said "Kids don't normally recover that fast and when they do start to come out they normally are sleepy" well they do not know VALKYRIE the bionic baby! She was fine, and after they patched her up we were on our way home by about 9:30. They said there is a good chance it will scar but the chances can be smaller if the stitches are removed in 5 days. We came home and put our floppy 2 year old to bed, unfortunately we have no wine in the house other we could have totally used some. However Skyler was up till midnight, wanting to party, needless to say a stressful night. Well and now we know Valkyrie's first trip to the ER was on November 14, 2009 at 6:30pm.

Skyler is 4 months

Skyler is 4 months today and sadly I have to report today is my last day of leave. I'll be returning to work full time starting Monday. Just when I get the hang of the girls and we start really having fun, with trips to the "bouncy house", library, museums then I have to leave them. I am extremely heart broken to be leaving my girls. No one can care and love them as I do. (well their dad is pretty dang close) I'm their mom and I know all their idiosyncrasy's and tricks, and tricks of my own to get through the day. This week was a week of last: my last week off, Valkyrie's last day at a great daycare, my last day off with Skyler alone and my last day with both girls. Needless to say it has been a very emotional week.

Ok, enough of that, on to the real post, Sklyer is 4 months!(Valkyrie's post will follow shortly) Skyler is a very happy and content baby. Valkyrie can almost always get her to laugh and smile. Skyler likes to use her legs strength and stand on my lap and almost immediately she will squeak with joy. When she sees her reflection she always smiles and goggles. I know I said this before but Skyler lets so many things roll right off her. Not matter how many times or how hard Valkyrie will hug her, she just shakes it off. Even when Valkyrie throws toys or pinches Skyler ("What?" you say, my perfect Valkyrie, yes even she acts out sometimes) Skyler may cry for a brief moment and moves on and forgives her sister, sometimes mom has a harder time letting it go.

Lately Skyler and I took a few mommy and baby Platies classes. She finds it quiet fun watching me work out, and let me tell you, squats while holding a +12lbs baby is no breeze. Funny from the moment I found out I was pregnant with Skyler I have been taking classes at the Indigo Wellness Center. She has quite literally grown up at that place, from my yoga, pilaties, belly dancing, zumba and even prenatal yoga classes. Who knows maybe she will be a future Yoga teacher, she already has the inner peace thing down. Skyler can now hold her head up while she is on her belly and even roll over (Watch out) She "talks" so much. She is very vocal and makes lots of sounds, sometimes she will make her pirate face, where she talks out the side of her mouth and sticks out her tung. We have just recently been putting her in the highchair, Valkyrie has graduated to a booster seat (a make shift one, she sits on my yoga block at the table)
It is nice having 2 arms to eat with again :)
So I recently compaired my baby book photos to Skyler and YEP she has my eyes, she still has her dads hairline, I came out with gobs of hair. Skyler is bald like Valkyrie was at this age. I know I am a sap but my favorite thing to do is just kiss her soft
cheeks! The nighttime is my favorite time and not just becasue it means some much needed rest for mom but as a crawl into my bed Skyler in my arms, Valkyrie in her bed next to me and Jeff at my side and Huey at my feet, I feel like a real family and I feel home.
Okay I better get going, like I said Valkyrie update will follow soon. (Shhh....she is going to be 2!)

Cars suck gas, ride a bike

THE GREEN COMMUTER!
As you know I have been commuting by bike for the past 12 weeks, so I asked Jeff to take a photo of me in all my gear. On this particular morning it was about 50 outside and pouring rain. (note the rain cover on my bag)
I will miss traveling like this to work when I return full time, I have enjoyed the exercise and "me quiet commuting time"...well "The Flight of the Choncords" on my iPod keep me entertained as I ride. I hope to return to this way of commuting this summer when Skyler is strong enough to ride in the bike trailer with Valkyrie. (Valkyrie is in the back, watching her mommy get ready for work)

I would highly recommend riding to work, it requires some changes and proper gear but you will love it!
Oh course there are some days when the wind is blowing against me and adds to my commute time but hey it is great resistance training. In all serious I have really enjoyed it. I am surprised as to how many drivers out there don't know proper hand signals. So when you see a rider put up their left arm, don't wave at them as you cut them off, it means "RIGHT TURN!"

Well I better get going I have a baby and me Yoga class to get to, I am determined to lose this extra pregancy weight. :)

Take care, and next time...take a bike!

Pumpkin Heads

Well we carved pumpkins this year and the girls had a blast. Valkyrie did not like the "Guts" and would scream when we got close to her with them. But She did draw the face of her pumpkin and her daddy cut it out for her. Above is all the finished pumpkins. I did a heart for my girls, Jeff made a castle for his princesses and Valkyrie did a happy face. Below is a picture of her pointing to her pumpkin.
Valkyrie's happy pumpkin head

Daddy lifting Valkyrie to see inside, "yuck"
Watching as her daddy carves the pumpkin.

Skyler watching all the action.

The girls had a fun Halloween. We had some friends over to eat (no, no, not TO EAT.....for dinner, no not FOR DINNER...oh come on) We played Guitar Hero. Valkyrie is AMAZING on drums and vocals, maybe this girl has a future in the preforming arts. We handed out Organic cookies....come on you know me, I had to stay true to our crunchy granola selfs. If I could I would have handed out pencils. :) I just can't justify giving kids candy, they get enough by the end of the night and the main reason is I wanted to hand out something that I would actually eat if we had tons leftover. I know, next year the kids will probably skip our house, but that is okay I hear the people next door are grumpy too. :) Ha (just kidding Deb).
We are doing well and hope everyone had a happy and safe Halloween.
